The language is unequivocal.

The range of activities protected by the First Amendment is broad. Its placement as the first of ten amendments to the Constitution is a clear sign of how central to the American way of life the Founders viewed our freedom to worship, speak, report, protest and petition the government.

We live in a time, however, when even the unequivocal can be equivocated … narrowed … abridged … a circle of freedom shrinking to a pinpoint. Provocative speakers are banned from campuses or physically harassed into silence. Members of Congress propose misguided attempts to regulate online speech. And people who contribute to controversial causes – left and right, political and religious – are targeted for shaming, punishment, defunding and firing.
