ISSUES
Priorities for the 118th Congress: We will monitor proposed legislation and work to modify, remove or defeat provisions that threaten First Amendment rights. Examples of legislation we oppose:
In addition, we will press for legislation to affirmatively protect First Amendment rights. For example:
- Forced disclosure of membership in and contributions to advocacy organizations—whether the NAACP and ACLU, or FreedomWorks and the Heritage Foundation—many of which have already been subjected to burdensome donor disclosure requirements in California and other jurisdictions.
- Proposed government regulation of internet speech.
In addition, we will press for legislation to affirmatively protect First Amendment rights. For example:
- Legislation requiring state-funded and private secular universities that accept federal funds to respect their students’ and faculties’ speech and religious rights.
- Legislation protecting against other retaliation for unpopular speech.
- Legislation protecting reporters’ confidential sources.
- Legislation protecting speech, conscience and religious freedom in the military.
Religious Faith and School Choice
Many religions urge parents to send their children to a religious school within their faith. Thousands of schools across America serve this need while meeting all the stringent requirements of the state to teach math, science, history, English and other vital subjects.
Unfortunately, in many states and in some quarters of the federal government, the role of religious schools is not appreciated or respected. Some states even deny benefits to families who send their children to these schools – assistance that those same families would receive if they sent their children to other private schools.
In the courts, the public square, and the halls of Congress, Protect The 1st supports the right of parents to educate their children in religious schools
